Patty Simon has worked in oils, watercolors, pastels, pen & ink, etc., but finds that nothing else is as much fun as colored pencil. She takes many pictures with her digital camera to use as inspiration and reference for her colored pencil pieces.
As to selecting the next subject, some things just beg to be drawn or painted; whether it’s animals, flowers, still life or anything else. Her two cats show up in her work very often as she is a “cat person” and they make very good (and handy) models. She picks up many new ideas to try from various art publications and workshops, some of which may be incorporated into later work. Trying new things keeps art fresh and exciting and there’s always something new to learn.
Patty is the current president of the Memphis Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America and a member of the Memphis/Germantown Art League. She has served as the newsletter editor for both groups. Her painting, “Parrot Tulips” is in the August/September 2005 issue of International Artist magazine. During the past 5 years, she has participated in juried and group shows sponsored by CPSA DC108, MGAL and the Pen Women and has won several awards. She also won an honorable mention in the Strathmore Paper Co.’s 2001 Art Competition. She has donated artwork to the WKNO-TV Art Auction for over 20 years and is a Silver Star Artist with MGAL.
A large part of being an artist is learning to be more observant and see the beauty in how the light shines on or through something, colors, shapes or textures in everyday things.
